When I try to play a scenario on greenfoot, all it shows is the background of the site and some text in black saying, "your browser ignores the <APPLET> tag." I also can't seem to upload a game I programmed. someone please help!

well, for the first problem, you need the java plugin. which browser are you using?
My friend has the same problem! Are you using Internet Explorer? He is. He has java installed but the plugin may not be enabled.
if you are using internet explorer, you should switch the browser. I suggest Firefox, I am using it for a long time, nearly 5 years, and no problems with java or other things
I know the problem, you probably have got the java plugin but Firefox disenables that.
Klick on Extras and on Add-On's.
When you are in the Add-On manager there probably is the Add-On Java Platform SE 7 or something like that.
When it is disenabled you have to enable it.
Then it should work.
