im currently trying to use gifs however it just doesn't let me when i import it it just closes the window and doesn't work. how can i fix it?

Try just creating a new class (call it anything) with menu bar, Edit > New class ... , and copy/paste the class code into it. You should find it at greenfoot/lib/greenfoot/common/GifImage.JAVA (open with an editor to copy class).
