after converting the wav to mp3, it worked, but I had to delete the wave file, even after deleting all calls to the wave file

The code worked fine in my - excellent suggestion. I placed the sound file in my constructor with the suggested code and it worked fine: Greenfoot.playSound("fire.wav"); The sound file ran once (because it was in the instructor) which was perfect.
