What do you mean by "in effect" - are you actually running IE9 or something slightly different?

I don't know - but it works very well in Chrome on OSX and Win7 for me. I wouldn't use IE if you paid me. Okay - I guess if you paid me ;)

Another thing mrjb4 if you have no solution why bother entering the discussion. You can clearly understand English and you know quite well what i mean. The question would not make sense if i was using something not specified in the warning message,,,durrrrr

Hey, mr teddy bear(mjrb4) just checked your profile. If you are a student working on Greenfoot you should know better than making Snide remarks in threads where the user is trying to help the developers of the site and developers of Greenfoot with ligitimate feedback. This is probably a cookie problem (maybe), but you lot will be more up on the problem than me, im just a person from England with bad grammer.

Wow. In all my time on forums I'm not quite sure I've had such, err, interesting feedback from such a legitimate question! You said you were "in effect" using IE9. Now this to me means that you're not actually using IE9 but using a browser perhaps built on its rendering engine, some other part of it, a browser reporting it was IE9 - could have been whatever. It wasn't a snide remark based on your grammar in the slightest, it wasn't meant to be taken as one... it was a valid question that was aimed at me trying to gain a valuable piece of information to help you as efficiently as I could. Sometimes (most of the time) when giving support we have to ask questions to try and narrow down the problem before giving a definite answer. It's because we need the information to answer the problem, not for any other reason! Please don't jump down people's throats when they're just making casual remarks or questions - we try to be a friendly bunch here, honest :-) Now I've established you're *actually* running IE9, a few things to check: - Is the Java plugin installed correctly and is it enabled (I've seen IE disable it before seemingly randomly)? - Have you tried clearing the Java cache - I don't mean the browser cache which is different, but the actual plugin cache. - Have you tried a reinstall of IE9 and does it work then? I can't seem to reproduce the problem on my box running IE9, unless it's something quite specific that causes it (or does it happen whenever you visit the greenfoot web page?)

You know quite well what i meant in the original post, dont start trying to worm your way out of it. Why did you not ask them questions in your original reply. Again i ask you, if i was not running one of the browsers mentiioned in the site warning what would be the point of this thread and my post. Your clever enough to understans that surely, else how did you get into university in the first place.

@mjrb4 - well i guess you can say you tried ... which is more than I would've done at that point. That is a classic case of "how not to get an answer". I would actually like to thank you for your response because it was helpful to me. Thanks.

actinium, First of all, I don't have an answer to your question right now, but it does seem that other people using IE9 aren't having any problems. Have you put the browser into "compatibility mode"? - maybe that is causing a problem. See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/How-to-use-Compatibility-View-in-Internet-Explorer-9. Regarding this forum: you are out of line when you respond to people like mjrb4, who are trying to help, with snappy responses. It wouldn't have hurt you to have simply clarified that yes, you are actually using IE9, but instead, you insulted him. Please be polite.

The problem has gone away now and nobody fixed it. Thats strange. I will keep any future problems i find to myself, thanks for your help, not.

This made me think - is banning even possible on the greenfoot forums? It'd never even occurred to me before, seeing as the community is so nice... Really surprising to have someone like actinium here. @mjrb4 Well done on being the better man and still trying to help even after he was insulting.

We can certainly ban people, but we won't go to that extreme unless it's really called for.

I was prepared to let this thread die but Duta you decided it was worth giving the thread a bump. The question was a simple one, "Why does the website tell me im running an old browser when in effect im running IE9", now apart from a missing comma, that question is quite simple. The problem seems to be with the words "In effect" Adverb: In actuality, in fact,", maybe if i left "in effect" out the responder may of responded with an answer not a question. So i repeat, what was so hard about answering the original question with an answer and not with a question. Oh by the way the problem has gone away, i no longer get the error message. Did someone at microsoft see this thread and fix it, was it fixed by magic or did someone at Greenfoot tweak it. Oh and Duta, you are young with a lot to learn, "This made me think - is banning even possible on the greenfoot forums?" says it all, you will make a very good politician, and Duta, there is no need for a ban, i have banned myself.

actinium, when people say that something is the case "in effect" what they usually mean is that it is not the actual case, but the effect is the same as if it were. It is obvious now that you didn't intend it that way but nobody else knew that when your first posted about the problem. See dictionary.reference.com definition of "in effect" (below the heading "idioms"): a. for practical purposes; virtually: His silence was in effect a confirmation of the rumor. Note specifically the use of the word "virtually" which definitely does not mean "in actuality" or "in fact" - it means the opposite. So your use of the words "in effect" implied that you were not actually using IE9. This seemed a strange thing to say; hence mjrb4 asked you to confirm whether or not you were actually using IE9.
